Pay it Forward
Networking is an altruistic "Pay It Forward" activity.
It is not "tit for tat" where you expect a direct return for each good deed you do. There are millions of LinkedIn users with millions of ways to use the service. People have different responsibilities, demands on their time, and access and availability to networking.
Networking response is uncertain, slow, and modest. Read more at ResponseTimeExpectations, InactiveMembers, and Networking.
You cannot expect immediate results, keep count, and insist that others always act just like you.
It is not sales where "close" people. Your network has a relationship with you, not product or service.
It is not direct marketing where you send out mass emails.
Pay It Forward is based on trust and mutual support. You help because you can. In return people will help you if and when they can. As you build your network, you will see a positive return in relationships developed and aggregate benefits over time.
